Trainer Bio:

Hello, my name is Alyssa and I am part of this year’s in-hand division of the Teens and Oregon Mustangs Challenge, and I will be training my filly Jewel this year through the program! I chose to do the Teens and Oregon mustang challenge to get more horse training experience, but also to help a mustang find a great loving home. I believe in gaining a horse’s respect and having a relationship where they feel they can trust you, not one that is built on fear. I will be using principles from Clinton Anderson’s Colt Starting, Fundamental, and Intermediate series to train Jewel and make her a calm and reliable horse for whoever purchases her. Thank you for visiting our page!

Jewel has been making great progress. So far she knows how to lead very well, lounge, back up, do forehand and haunch turns, go over various obstacles such as bridges and tarps, and how to be caught in a large area such as an arena. My goal for Jewel is to continue working on trailer loading with her, as she is still a little hesitant when asked to load, but jumps in eventually! I also hope to get her used to wearing a saddle, so when whoever adopts her takes her home, she will be basically ready to start under saddle. Thank you, and please feel free to contact me through our Facebook page if you have any further questions about Jewel!

Since my last post, Jewel has learned lots of new things! She has been saddled multiple times and didn’t even blink an eye. We have been doing lots of groundwork and desensitizing with the saddle as well to get her ready to ride. We have been working lots on our showmanship, in-hand trail, and desensitizing, especially to plastic bags. I am still working on getting her really comfortable with picking up her feet, trotting next to me, and continuing our showmanship skills. Feel free to check out our Facebook page for more frequent updates on our training!
